Book review: What happens when the "wars" in Gaza & Ukraine come home to OUR cities too?

      Not to be an alarmist or nothing -- but our entire planet seems to be teetering on the brink of World War 3, economic catastrophe, hegemonic ruin, dictatorial crack-downs, horrendous genocides, phony pandemics, ethical decay and/or civil unrest right now.  But what will our own current life here in modern America be like after all this mis-managed and stage-directed bull-dookey finally boils over?  

      It's not gonna be pretty.

      Some people are hoarding gold against all these looming disasters.  Some people are hoarding food.  Me?  I'm hoarding books.  Perhaps I could survive okay in a world without cell phones and computers or maybe even without electricity -- but who wants to live in a world without books?

     It's like Albert Einstein once said: "All you really need to know is the location of the library."  

 

      And when things get really dicey in the future and the streets are filled with blood in my hometown too, not just in Gaza City and Kiev, then knowing the location of my apartment will also be a good thing -- because I have been hoarding books there ever since The Great Lockdown of 2020 (presuming that my apartment hasn't already been bombed by NATO, looted by desperate bad guys, attacked by nuclear warheads, repossessed by the military-industrial complex or raided by the thought police.)

      "Good grief, Jane," you might say, "why are you being so pessimistic?  Again?"  Because of the horrific genocide in Gaza, Syria, Ukra$ne and Yemen, sure, but also because of the fact that Passover and Easter are almost upon us and the price of lamb roasts, fresh eggs and even matzos have skyrocketed -- and also because of the latest book that I am currently reading.

     Prophet Song, by Paul Lynch, is an intense and nightmarish novel set on the premise that what has happened to Palestine and Kiev can also happen to our hometowns as well.  

     First the government is slowly but surely seized by fascist Zionist, AIPAC and neo-con types.  Then, when people fight back against censorship, inflation, mind-control and arbitrary firings, they are deemed terrorists.  Then the jailings and disappearances start -- and then the bombings.  Food becomes scarce.  Electricity goes out.  Schools, businesses and hospitals close.  Libraries close too.

       Slowly but surely, this modern Western city is turned into Gaza or Donbas while our heroine, a mother, struggles to keep her family together as airstrikes fall all around her and terror and mayhem slowly but surely replace the pace of everyday normal life.

      Right now I'm on page 244 of this prophetic novel but it's easy to imagine how it will end.  Just take a look at Rafah or Zaporizhzhia or Gaza City.  Go on the internet and watch the faces of the weeping mothers there as they hold dead children in their arms.

      Paul Lynch does a really good job of picturing what Gaza City or Kiev would be like if, instead of being on the other side of some vast ocean, they were actually located in our very own hometown.  

 

      Lynch's vision is horrifying.  It is enough to make every mother (and reader) in the world demand an immediate stop to all "war" and to put all our war-crazed leaders in jail.  Sadly, however, I do not see the current worldwide slaughter ending any time soon -- only spreading.  

 

     Until it reaches our hometowns too.
